Many say a marriage can survive many calamities but the difference in value system. Entrepreneurship is also like marriage where difference in value system between the business partners is bound to lead to catastrophe.
If value systems do not match, there is lack of coherence in personal objectives of the venture, lack of acceptance of roles being played, absence of communication and transparency … and above all … lack of confidence in each other; the road is guaranteed to be far from smooth.
People may decide to start a venture with widely different objectives. Some want to make lots of money, others may want to create an intuition, many do it for freedom of working and so on. It is not that partners with different objectives should not come together, it is just that everyone should be clear of each other’s objectives – as long as they are not conflicting and there is acceptance it is fine. Conflict in values however can be extremely dangerous. For example, if you formally believe in high degree of integrity one should not partner with someone who does not value integrity.
Then there are other factors like complementariness of talent and experience, style of working and most importantly some past experience of each other.
It is important to recognize these before partnering as with a boat full of rowing talent but peddling the boat in different directions would make the boat only move nowhere, it may make it sink too.
